As dedicated CASARA volunteer appreciate the value of expediency and accuracy. Any tools manual or digital that help us achieve those goals are worth the time needed to master the skills required in their use. Digital has the advantage that it can be shared within a search group by printing and uploading from common computer CSAD and SAR plots. One thing I noticed in working with Ozi and SHQ is the need for some new terms CASARA language if you will.Comments invited.
MAP...purchased paper item
PRINT...a computer paper map image with CSAD PT or CLA wpts and rtes displayed.
UPLOAD...transfering wpts rtes to GPS
DOWNLOAD...transfering GPS trks to computer
Zone 8 signed a joint use agreement with SARM to digitize the SGRM 05 (Saskatchewan Grid Road Map 2005) by scanning to PNG files and calibrating to MAP files on Oziexplorer. Etopo has excellent detail for landscape search "but"to much detail for "road search" every cowtrail is depicted some barely passible in summer much less winter. The SGRM clearly shows "maintained grid roads" used regularily by school buses and local residents.
This detail would enable SHQ TCR plot over roads of "high probability" without going off road in case of missing vehicle or person SAR.The TCR uploaded to GPS could even be flown in VFR darkness and productive if person had signal device such as flashlight or pocket strobe.The file is 55mb any CASARA Sask member wanting file for use with Oziexplorer yours for asking after completing one page two signator (your Zone commander) agreement which is required by SARM head office Regina.Contact me Zone 8 for more info.Calibration is good match to Etopo flyable accurate considering the map is 1,000,000:1 scale.The map was formerly distributed by Saskatchewan Dept of Hiways but was given to SARM who charge $1.75 for paper copies.Digital CASARA use no charge just buy me a refreshment at next SAREX ;)
